Celebrating African Culture in the Diaspora
African fabric and textiles are among the oldest surviving artistic and technological achievements in human civilisation. The patterns and colours are so vibrant and intricate, you can get lost in just looking at it, long before you put it on and wear it.
Textile making is a craft that began long before industrial weaving emerged in Europe. In African communities people had already developed sophisticated methods of spinning cotton, processing bark cloth, tanning leather, weaving raffia, producing silk, creating natural dyes, and decorating fabrics through batik, resist-dyeing, embroidery, appliqué, beadwork and symbolic pattern-making.
Unlike many textile traditions elsewhere, African cloth is rarely fabric for “just clothing” the body. It’s a statement. A ceremonial shroud. A class marker, an adornment and so much more.
African Fabric and Textiles traditionally represents identity, ancestry, spirituality, wealth, political views / authority, age, marital status, its a medium for communicating with the ancestors, like a coded language, or interpretations for proverbs or historical events, and lessons in morality told in stories handed down from elders to youths and elders and youths again and again.

Today, African fashion has become one of the world’s fastest-growing creative industries, influencing designers from London, Paris, New York and Milan while maintaining strong cultural roots.
